An espresso machine is not maintenance-free, and the ones that automate grinding and tamping are no exception. The good news is that almost all of the cleaning is thirty seconds of small habits after each shot. Skip those, and you end up with a scrubbing job.
This is the routine we have used on our Breville Oracle for more than two years. The daily steps apply to any machine with a portafilter and a steam wand.
After Every Shot
1. Knock Out the Puck
As soon as the shot finishes and the cup is out of the way, remove the portafilter. A dry, solid puck that drops out in one piece is a good sign that the dose and tamp were right.

Knock the portafilter against the bar of the knock box. One firm tap is usually enough. A soupy puck that sticks to the basket means the dose was light for the basket, not that anything is wrong with the machine.

2. Rinse the Basket
Rinse the basket under the tap or under the group head. Loose grounds left in the basket go stale and taste bitter in the next shot.

Hold the portafilter tilted so the water drains and the basket does not pool. Wipe the rim and the ears with a cloth so grounds do not build up where the portafilter seats.

3. Flush the Group Head
Run a second or two of water through the empty group head. This clears grounds off the shower screen and out of the gasket area. We do it after every shot and again before the next one, and the shower screen stays clean between weekly scrubs.

Then lock the empty portafilter back in. It stays warm for the next shot and keeps the gasket from drying out.

4. Wipe and Purge the Steam Wand
If you steamed milk, do this before anything else. Wipe the wand with a damp cloth kept only for that job, then open the steam for a second to blow out any milk inside the tip. On the Oracle, lowering the wand over the drip tray triggers an automatic purge.

Milk dries fast and blocks the tip. A wand that is wiped and purged every time never needs more than this.
Every Week
- Scrub the shower screen with a group brush while flushing. Grounds that the daily flush misses collect around the edge.
- Soak the basket and portafilter in hot water with a little espresso machine cleaner to dissolve coffee oils. Rinse well.
- Empty and wash the drip tray. It fills faster than you think, and standing water smells.
- Wipe down the machine and the counter around the grinder.

Monthly or When the Machine Asks
- Run the cleaning cycle. The Oracle displays a prompt when it is due. It uses a cleaning tablet and a blanking disc in the portafilter to backflush the group head. Follow the manual's steps exactly.
- Check the water filter. The Oracle's tank filter has a replacement interval. A fresh filter slows scale buildup and is far easier than descaling.
- Descale when prompted. The machine tracks use and tells you. Use the descaling procedure from the manual, not a generic one.
- Clean the grinder. Empty the hopper, run grinder-cleaning pellets through or brush out the burrs, and wipe the chute. If you single dose, the hopper stays mostly empty and this is a smaller job.
Why This Is Worth It
The daily steps add about thirty seconds to each drink. Skipping them does not break the machine right away; it just makes the coffee taste a little worse each day as old oils and grounds build up, until one morning a shot tastes bitter for no reason you can find in the dial-in.
We cover this honestly in our Oracle review: automatic does not mean maintenance-free. But the routine above is the whole of it, and after two years it is as automatic as the grinding.

Frequently asked questions
How often should you clean an espresso machine?
A little after every shot, a bit more each week, and a deeper clean monthly. Daily: knock out the puck, rinse the basket, flush the group, purge the wand. Weekly: scrub the shower screen and soak the basket. Monthly or when prompted: run the cleaning cycle and check the water filter.
Do you need to backflush a Breville Oracle?
The Oracle prompts you to run its cleaning cycle with a cleaning tablet and the supplied disc. Follow the manual for the exact procedure. Between cycles, a quick flush of the group head after each shot keeps the shower screen clear.
What happens if you do not clean the steam wand?
Milk dries inside the tip and on the outside within minutes. It blocks the holes, affects the foam, and eventually sours. Wipe it and purge it immediately after every use. It is the one step you cannot postpone.
How often should you descale an espresso machine?
It depends on water hardness and use. Breville's Oracle tracks usage and prompts for descaling; it also includes a water filter that slows scale. Follow the manual's schedule rather than a fixed calendar.
Can you leave the portafilter in the group head?
Yes, and we do. After rinsing the basket, lock the empty portafilter back in. It stays warm for the next shot and keeps the gasket from drying out.
